My last post featured some hardcore funk and soul; this one is about as pure as pop can get, "Lonely Is (As Lonely Does)" from Like This, the db's third record, and their first without Chris Stamey. The db's were one of those bands I should have liked back when I was buying records that had any association with Mitch Easter or Don Dixon, but for some reason, I never latched on to them. I was actually introduced to this song through Marti Jones' first record, Unsophisticated Time (which not surprisingly was produced by Don Dixon). It still took me years to get around to the original, and when I finally did, I fell in love.
This may be the perfect pop song, and when they shift into the bridge, my heart gets all fluttery. Enjoy!
I have almost 7,600 songs in my iTunes library and it's about time I start sharing them on a regular basis. I'd like to do this semi-regularly, but life is full of uncertainty and failure, so I wouldn't count on it. However, I start in good faith and with a need to share.
So let's begin, shall we? Today's track is "Easy Access [Part 1]" from the El Michels Affair, a nifty little piece of horn-driven funk and R&B. Don't be deceived though; it may sound like it was recorded in the early '70s but actually comes from a 2002 Soul Fire 12" single, and the band appears to be a going concern (at least according to their discography). There's a lengthier bio over at Giant Step for anyone who's interested. But that's all background noise - this is all about the track, and it's quite a track at that. Enjoy!
