My last post featured some hardcore funk and soul; this one is about as pure as pop can get, "Lonely Is (As Lonely Does)" from Like This, the db's third record, and their first without Chris Stamey. The db's were one of those bands I should have liked back when I was buying records that had any association with Mitch Easter or Don Dixon, but for some reason, I never latched on to them. I was actually introduced to this song through Marti Jones' first record, Unsophisticated Time (which not surprisingly was produced by Don Dixon). It still took me years to get around to the original, and when I finally did, I fell in love.
This may be the perfect pop song, and when they shift into the bridge, my heart gets all fluttery. Enjoy!
I have almost 7,600 songs in my iTunes library and it's about time I start sharing them on a regular basis. I'd like to do this semi-regularly, but life is full of uncertainty and failure, so I wouldn't count on it. However, I start in good faith and with a need to share.
So let's begin, shall we? Today's track is "Easy Access [Part 1]" from the El Michels Affair, a nifty little piece of horn-driven funk and R&B. Don't be deceived though; it may sound like it was recorded in the early '70s but actually comes from a 2002 Soul Fire 12" single, and the band appears to be a going concern (at least according to their discography). There's a lengthier bio over at Giant Step for anyone who's interested. But that's all background noise - this is all about the track, and it's quite a track at that. Enjoy!

And finally, for sheer entertainment value, there's this:
This one ranks as my most interesting 2006 photo according to Flickr's magic donkey (zzzzz):
And for some reason, this one garnered the second most comments in 2006 (next to the Holga image above):
All in all it was a pretty good year for photos. Can't wait to see what 2007 has to offer!
Just trying out Flickr's recent Vox integration with one of my favorite recent photos.
*Sigh*That building had so much history and so much potential.
The details are over at my other site. Here's a hint: check the URL on that link...
How many computers do you have in your house?
Submitted by Foomper.
It's a little embarrassing, but I own three at the moment:
- One Gateway 400-series laptop purchased in 2002. I bought this machine in a moment of panic when my desktop crapped out on me in the middle of a project. The Gateway was a workhorse too, despite the fact that it only had a 15MB hard drive. It's the one I took to China, and the one I brought with me when I started school. It certainly feels sluggish these days, and the fan sounds like a WWII fighter taking off, but I still pull it out from time to time.
- One HP desktop, used mostly for talking with Sheena in the morning via Skype. It's a great machine, but marginalized since I bought the...
- Apple PowerBook G4. My first computer was a Macintosh PowerBook 145, way back in the early '90s but I abandoned Apple when I started working in corporate America circa 1996. I was happy enough with PCs too, until I came to school and started seeing PowerBooks everywhere. I picked mine up in Spring of 2005, and have never, ever regretted the decision. Best computer I've ever had.
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your music player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.) Inspired by Stephanie.
- Prince - Dirty Mind (from Dirty Mind)
- The Whitefield Brothers - Serengeti Bonus Beat (from Soul Fire: The Majestic Collection)
- Isaac Hayes - By the Time I Get to Phoenix (from Hot Buttered Soul)
- Ivy - Kite (from Guestroom)
- Beatles - Day Tripper (from Past Masters, Volume Two)
- Ali Farka Toure with Ry Cooder - Sega (from Talking Timbuktu)
- XTC - Fly on the Wall (from English Settlement)
- The Blue Rhythm Orchestra - Hold 'Er Deacon (from Harlem Jazz - The 20s)
- Blow Monkeys - Digging Your Scene (from Living In Oblivion: The 80's Greatest Hits, Vol. 4)
- The Flaming Lips - One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21 (from Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots)
Surprisingly, that's completely representative of what I like and listen to. A little funk, a little soul, some (early) jazz, elegant pop, angular pop, cheesy 80s hits and relatively mainstream indie/alternative (whatever that means). And Prince. And the Beatles. Of course, my charts over at last.fm are much more complete...
